Psalm 89:1-4

I will sing of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever; with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations. For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever;

in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.” You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one; I have sworn to David my servant: ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah

Ethan, the writer of today’s psalm, was a Levite (1 Chronicles 15:17-18) and a wise person (1 Kings 4:31). He was committed to never stop singing of God’s great love and to proclaim God’s faithfulness “to all generations.” “I will sing,” Ethan said, “of the steadfast love of the Lord, forever.”

Realizing the brevity of life, how does a person vow to proclaim God’s faithfulness “to all generations?” The answer is easy; the application is hard. We live our lives before our children and grandchildren in such a way that they see the true difference Jesus makes and desire to live godly lives before their children and grandchildren as well.

How you live is what you leave. The impact of one life makes a difference for generations. What we do today echoes into the future. The next generation will stand on our spiritual shoulders.

The question is this: When you pass away what will you pass on?

Talking to God

Father, remind me that my actions today impact tomorrow. Remind me that my individual life is lived in the plural. Guard my thoughts, words, desires, and actions. Help me live in a way that shows my children and grandchildren that I am a full-out follower of Jesus.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
