ENGAGE: A Conversation with God.

As we begin a new year, let’s focus on learning how to talk with God. That’s what prayer is—simply talking with God. So, for the next thirty days let’s work together to develop a more powerful prayer life. I know that’s one thing I really need.

Matthew 6:5-6
And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Seizing the opportunity to address the large crowds that were following him, Jesus went up on a mountainside, and sat down. From that position, the greatest preacher who ever lived proclaimed the greatest sermon ever preached. In what some call his “inaugural address,” Jesus delivered an invaluable message to his followers. Among the many subjects he taught that day was prayer.

Interestingly, Jesus began his instruction on prayer by aiming directly at motive. The purpose of prayer is not to impress people but to communicate with God. To remedy the temptation to impress, Jesus advised to pray in solitude. He said, “Go into your room and shut the door” and talk to God in private.  And even when our prayer must be public, our heart should be locked in a one-on-one with God.

Those of us who run in church circles have many opportunities to pray in public. I confess that more than once I have wondered if my prayer impressed. Was it eloquent enough for a pastor? Was it theological enough for those who expected it to be “deep”? Was it caring enough for those who were hurting? Was it challenging enough for those who needed a spiritual kick in the pants?

Jesus’ point is simple. Don’t pray to impress people! Prayer is simply a conversation with God.

Father, forgive us for being closer to the hypocrites on the street corners than we care to admit. Engage us in a one-on-one with you and keep our focus there. Remind us that if we try to please people, we cannot please you. Teach us how to talk with you. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Good morning Ron, I chuckled when I listened about yr concern about public prayer. When someone goes on and on I always think of a coaching principle- KISS. Keep it simple stupid. ?. It’s true of teaching , coaching and maybe praying ? I love listening to u each morning. Thank you
