ENGAGE: First Things First

How do you make sure your priorities are straight? How do you put first things first? How do you know for sure that you are not chasing the wrong things? In today’s passage, Jesus answers those questions.

Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

Most people, even believers, live for the stuff. Not bad stuff, but stuff, nonetheless. The right career. The right home. The right location. The right school. The right activities for the kids. The right social group. The right retirement plan. The right weekend activities. The right getaways. All the right stuff … just in the wrong order. When we live for stuff, at the end of the day, that’s exactly what we have—a bunch of stuff. Jesus says to flip the order.

The order Jesus puts forward focuses first on the spiritual. Seek to live by kingdom principles—loving God with all your heart, mind, soul, and strength, and loving your neighbor as yourself. Then, determine to live in obedience—making the necessary sacrifices to live in a right relationship with God and man. Then, with your spiritual head screwed on straight, God will give you the stuff that is really the right stuff.

Don’t worry about ordering all your priorities. Just put God first. He’ll take care of the rest.

Father, as we seek you first today, give the needed evidence that you really will take care of the other stuff. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
