Doing Great Things … the Wrong Way

1 Chronicles 13:9-10

When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD’s anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God.

David and his men were celebrating with all their might before the Lord. Finally, the ark of the covenant, representing the presence of God, was headed back to Jerusalem. The ark was on a cart pulled by oxen with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. But then the oxen stumbled, and when Uzzah reached out to steady the ark, he was struck down because he put his hand on the ark. Hmm . . . this needs some explanation.

God gave very specific instructions regarding the transport of the ark. Anytime it was moved, it was to be carried by the Levites with poles put through the rings on the side. The Levites were to carry the ark with the poles on their shoulders. David was bringing the ark back to Jerusalem, a great thing . . . but he was doing it in the wrong way.

Many believers think that as long as they are obeying God in the “big” stuff, all is well. But God calls for obedience even in the details. His instruction is not optional. His commands are not suggestions. Check your heart to see if you are doing great things for God in the wrong way.

Father, search my heart and show me if I am doing good . . . even great . . . things for You but in the wrong way. Give me the courage to obey You even in the details. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
