How do you handle the news, “We’ve decided to go a different direction.” or “We’ve chosen another person for the position.”? Those things settle hard on our hearts. Let’s consider how Samuel handled the same kind of news.
Samuel had led Israel well, but the people were done with their old prophet and priest riding around on a donkey. Surrounding countries had kings riding in chariots flanked by soldiers. That’s the fresh brand that Israel wanted. It was time for Samuel to get out of the way so an impressive king could lead the nation.
1 Samuel 8:6
But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the LORD.
Samuel’s turning to God in disappointment is a sure indicator that talking to God was an integral part of the man’s life. The nation rejected Samuel, so he turned to the One who never discards us. In the end, God directed Samuel to let the people have what they wanted. God had lessons to teach his people, but he continued to use his faithful servant, Samuel, in a major role. Samuel’s title changed, but not God’s purpose for him.

- Let God have your hurt, rejection, and disappointment. This is not a one-time act; it’s a three-step process—Step 1: Give it to God. Step 2: Give it to God again. Step 3: Repeat Step 2.
- Tell him, “God please take my hurt and use it.” Ask God to help you willingly make a change of title, position, or relationship for his deeper and more satisfying purpose.
Father, take my hurt and use it to make me into a person for your deeper purpose. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
