Mark 11:22-24

“Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”

In his amazing life of faith, George Mueller watched God supply the needs of his orphan ministry time and time again. He simply prayed and believed that God would provide all that was needed. And God did. Mueller said that his faith was the same kind of faith that all Christians have. His faith, however, had “been a little more developed by exercise.” Here is Mueller’s instruction on how a Christian can grow their faith.

Now, my beloved brothers and sisters, begin in a little way. At first I was able to trust the Lord for $10, then for $100, then for $1,000, and now, with the greatest of ease, I could trust Him for $1,000,000 if there was occasion. But first, I should quietly, carefully, deliberately examine and see whether what I was trusting for, was something in accordance with His promises in His written Word. If I found it was, the amount of difficulties would be no hindrance to my trust . . . God has never failed me! Trust Him for yourselves and find how true to His Word He is (George Mueller, Man of Faith, A Sims, Wipf & Stock, 2005, p. 36)

Mueller reminds us of two important truths about faith. First, we must trust God for things that are in line with His will. Mueller says to trust God for the things that are “in accordance with his promises in his written Word.” Second, faith is a learned discipline. Start by trusting God for smaller things. “Begin in a little way.” For Mueller, it was trusting for ten dollars, then for a hundred dollars. Like lifting weights builds muscle so God’s answered prayer builds faith. Here is Mueller’s challenge to each of us: “Trust him for yourselves and find how true to his Word he is.” Like Mueller, we will find that God never fails!

Father, we have so much to learn about trusting You. Help us take the baby steps we need to take in order to walk and live by faith. Help us to find out for ourselves that You are always true to Your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
