The Israelites sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD.
When God brought the Israelites across the Jordan into the land of promise, the word spread. The surrounding countries knew two things. First, Israel was going to try to conquer them, and second, the God of Israel was a powerful God. The country of Gibeon decided on a plan of deception.
Pretending to be from a distant country, the leaders of Gibeon came to Israel. Although they lived next door, they dressed in old clothes, patched sandals, and came with donkeys loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins. When they asked for a treaty, the Israelites “sampled their provisions” and agreed to a treaty of peace. But God’s people “did not inquire of the Lord.”
I was convicted when I read today’s passage. How many times do I make decisions without spending time in prayer? How many times do I decide to do or not do something by simply “sampling the provisions” (spreadsheets, test-drives, investment returns, outward appearances, etc.). Decisions require prayer. I know that, but knowing and not doing is a formula for failure.
Father, forgive me for depending on a “sampling of provisions.” Forgive me for making decisions without spending the needed time in prayer. Help me depend on you and not on myself to make the choices that will honor you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
