Deceiver

John 8:44

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Surrounding our passage today is a dialogue between Jesus and those who refused to believe in Him as the Son of God. These people not only rejected Jesus, they claimed that He was demon-possessed. Jesus used this opportunity to give a striking description of Satan.

Jesus explained that Satan’s purpose is to bring ruin. He has always been a murderer. His aim is to destroy. He is a liar and the evil one behind all lies. There is no truth in him. Deception characterizes his actions. Dishonesty is his native language.

Satan deceives the world into thinking that right is wrong and wrong is right. He chips away at the underpinnings of society by infecting thoughts and actions. “Your enemy the devil,” the Apostle Peter says, “prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…” (1 Peter 5:8-9)

Father, I am no match for Satan. Protect me from him. Help me stay alert. Help me resist him. Help me to always stand firm in the faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
