2 Chronicles 26:16

But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God….

How many times have you seen this under “Prayer Concerns” in the weekend bulletin?

Please pray fervently for the following people who desperately need our prayers:

  • Tom – Received a significant promotion
  • Sue – Honored as her high school’s outstanding student
  • Bob – Selected to the All-State baseball team
  • Esther – Named firm’s new partner
  • Tyler – Salesman of the year

I have never seen these in our church bulletin, yet I believe good times are more dangerous than challenging times. Just ask Uzziah. He came into power at age sixteen and reigned for fifty-two years. Uzziah defeated the Philistines, built towers for protecting his people, developed a well-trained army and designed cutting edge war machines. His fame spread far and wide “because he had become very powerful.” But we see in today’s passage, it was Uzziah’s success that led to pride and his downfall.

In his book What Should I Do with My Life? Po Bronson wrote, “Failure’s hard, but success is far more dangerous. If you’re successful at the wrong thing, the mix of praise and money and opportunity can lock you in forever.” Success can lock you into pride and pride always sits on the top of a very slippery slope.

Father, please don’t let us turn Your great blessings into our downfall. Help us keep our eyes on You whether facing the challenges or enjoying the successes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
