Counting the Cost

Have you ever done something you regretted? I’m pretty sure your answer is, “Yes.” Then you have something in common with King David.

In response to David’s disobedience, God told him to build an altar “on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite” and make a sacrifice for his sin. So, David asked Ornan for the floor and said, “Sell it to me at the full price” (1Chronicles 21:22 NIV).  But Ornan told David to take the floor and do with it whatever he wanted. Note David’s response.

1 Chronicles 21:24

But King David said to Ornan, “No, but I will buy them for the full price. I will not take for the Lord what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings that cost me nothing.”

The Christian life is a blessed life. We are forgiven, made righteous, reconciled to God, and indwelt by the Holy Spirit. God has given us everything we need to do everything he has called us to do. And…along with the blessings comes the cost. So, here’s the question: What does it cost you to serve Jesus? I mean, really? What sacrifices are you making for the One who gave it all for you?

Talking Points

  • Thank God for his great spiritual blessings: forgiveness, righteousness, reconciliation, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, eternal security, eternity.
  • Ask God to show you where you are taking these great blessings for granted. Pray that your life will never be a response that costs you nothing.

Father, we love your blessings. Help us to accept the cost of our responsibility. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
