Psalm 131
A song of ascents. Of David.

My heart is not proud, LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. Israel, put your hope in the LORD both now and forevermore.

Andrew Murray wrote, “The greatest test of whether the holiness we profess to seek or to attain is truth and life will be whether it produces an increasing humility in us. In man, humility is the one thing needed to allow God’s holiness to dwell in him and shine through him. The chief mark of counterfeit holiness is lack of humility. The holiest will be the humblest.”

Long before Murray, the psalmist pointed out the need for real humility. He desired to live with a humble heart. He wanted to keep his dreams and desires in check. He wanted to be like a “weaned child” walking by his mother with complete trust and contentment.

Like the mother who nurses her child, so God provides us with everything we need. We can walk beside Him with confidence that He will give us what is best for us. Humility comes from a calm and quiet heart focused on God alone.

Father, keep pride far from my heart. Don’t let me slow my growth by a lack of humility. Don’t let me live with counterfeit holiness. Grow me stronger with increasing humility. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
