Then Solomon stood before the altar of the LORD in front of the whole assembly of Israel, spread out his hands toward heaven and said: “ LORD, the God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below– you who keep your covenant of love with your servants who continue wholeheartedly in your way.”
It was a great day of celebration. Israel was at peace, and the temple was complete. The priests brought the ark of the Lord’s covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary. Solomon stood before the people and professed, “ . . . there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth below.” We know that to be true, but far too often our actions tell a different story.
In his book, Counterfeit Gods, Timothy Keller writes, “A counterfeit god is anything so central and essential to your life that, should you lose it, your life would be hardly worth living. A [counterfeit god] is whatever you look at and say in your heart of hearts, ‘If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.’” Keller then lists counterfeit gods ranging from family and children, to secure and comfortable circumstances, to political and social causes. Convicting, isn’t it?
Everyone follows someone or something. As believers, we have to make sure the one true God holds that central and essential part of our lives. There is no one like Him in heaven above or earth below. Make the adjustments and changes in your life to demonstrate you follow Him alone.
Father, show me if I am following counterfeit gods, point out what they are and help me make the changes to follow You and You alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
