Uncertainty is the only certainty in our lives. We just don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Money markets rise and fall. Health can take a quick turn. Children make decisions that alter their lives…and ours. One phone call can change everything. Uncertainty around us produces fears within us. But…the fear of uncertainty doesn’t wear well on followers of Jesus.

When the fear of uncertainty enters our minds and hearts, we need to focus on the person of God. Check out this psalm that gives us a great picture of who God is.

Psalm 33:6-11
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host. He gathers the waters of the sea as a heap; he puts the deeps in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him! For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm. The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing, he frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of his heart to all generations.

The power of God is seen in creation and his continued work in the world. Nothing happens apart from his direction. Satan is a powerful enemy, but he can only work under God’s sovereign permission (see the book of Job). The plans of God stand throughout all generations. What seems to us as uncertainty is all part of God’s bigger plan in the world and in our worlds.

God is in charge. Keep your focus on him. He drives away the fear of uncertainty.

Father,
When my life is rocked by uncertainty, please help me keep my focus on you. Help me to stand on the certainty of your Person and your Word. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
