Confronting My Fear – The Fear of Surrender

by | Oct 4, 2023 | Confronting Fear, Daily Devotion | 0 comments

Have you surrendered your life to God? Have you waived your rights, transferred control, and submitted to him? Have you said, “You are God, and I am not.”? Have you trusted in Jesus alone as the One who makes surrender life-changing? Have you come to grips with your spiritual need?

The 15th-century philosopher Blaise Pascal called our spiritual need a “God-shaped void.” The 4th-century theologian Augustine called it “an inward famine.” You can call it whatever you want, but we all have a deep longing for God. People try to fill that longing with all kinds of things. The prophet Jeremiah said that all the things we use to fill the “God-shaped void” are like “scarecrows in a cucumber field” (Jeremiah 10:5). Manmade idols are lifeless gods stuffed with straw. I think you agree with Jeremiah that trying to find significance in a career, adventure, money, cars, homes, and toys is a futile endeavor. Idols will never fill our hearts, but then, lifeless idols will never ask us to surrender, either.

But that’s what God does. He asks us to surrender to him. He asks us to let him fill the void and satisfy the inward famine. Our sins separated us from him and caused the void in the first place. Jesus paid the penalty for our sins by his surrender on the cross.

1 Peter 2:24
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

When you surrender to God, your life is finally in control. He brings purpose and meaning. He sets the direction. Contentment replaces fear. Death holds no power because you will pass from death to life. So, why are you waiting? Today is the day of surrender. Please pray this prayer with me.

Father,
Today, I desire to surrender my life to you. I admit that I am a sinner and desire to transfer control to you. I trust in Jesus as the One who surrendered his life for me on the cross to pay the penalty for my sins. Today, I surrender to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
