Confidence in Him

Psalm 146:1-5
Praise the LORD. Praise the LORD, my soul. I will praise the LORD all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing. Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God.

What delivers confidence? What brings calmness? What produces peace? What gives you hope?  A thriving economy? A stable job? Your person in the White House? A hefty retirement account? A strong military?

Check out today’s passage. Human beings—even the most powerful—cannot save. Even the most impressive person will die, robbing them of any semblance of power. On the very day the big shot dies, their hubris dies with them.

Who are you going to trust? Where are you turning for confidence? If your hope is not found in the Lord, sooner or later your teetering tower of trust will come crashing down. Without God, it’s just a matter of time before your faux calm turns to feverish chaos; but there is One who is eternal. He remains faithful forever. Blessed are those whose confidence is in Him.

Father, it is tempting to put my trust in things and the people around me. Give me great leaders, but never let me forget that You are the only One who will stand for eternity. Help me follow hard after You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
