Proverbs 3:24-26

If you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes, for the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught.

Every day the news is filled with things that shake our confidence. Is the virus subsiding or not? Will the vaccines have side effects or not? Will war break out in the Middle East? Will my health hold out? Will my finances hold out? Will my job survive? There is no shortage of questions in life. New ones seem to be around every corner.

But for the believer, the Lord will be our confidence. He will calm our fears. He will give us rest—physical and spiritual. He will keep us from getting caught in the trap of fear. Even in my most vulnerable time—when I lie down to sleep—God provides sweet confidence.

Our prayer today is taken from a book of old Puritan prayers. Make this your own.

Talking to God

Help me when I helpless lie,

            when my conscience accuses me of sin,

            when my mind is harassed by foreboding thoughts,

            when my eyes are held awake by personal anxieties.

Show thyself to me as the God of all grace, love and power;

            thou hast a balm for every wound,

                        a solace for all anguish,

                        a remedy for every pain,

                        a peace for all disquietude.

Permit me to commit myself to thee awake or asleep.
