Job had been through hell on earth. He lost his possessions, his children, and his health. Discouragement set in like a winter blizzard and he began to question God’s love. Finally, God responded. In our passage today, God reminds Job why he can be trusted.

Job 38:1-5

Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said: “Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Dress for action like a man; I will question you, and you make it known to me. Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?”

God is eternal—there was never a time when he was not; there will never be a time when he is not. He is independent—he depends on no one or no thing for his existence. He didn’t need Job to hold one end of the tape measure when he marked off the dimensions of the earth. He is the Creator—whatever exists is created by and sustained by his gracious hand.

You see, God knew that the answer to Job’s questions was not “Why?” but “Who?” When we understand that the “Who?” behind all our life is God…that knowledge translates into trust.

Talking Points

  • Acknowledge God’s wisdom. Tell him and remind yourself that he does all things well.
  • Thank God for his sovereign work. All he does is for your best interest. Yes, even when you and I can’t understand it.

Lord, our prayer today is this—let our knowledge of who you are allow us to trust you every step of our journey. In Christ’s name. Amen.
