Confidence

Joshua 21:45

Not one word of all the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel had failed; all came to pass.

Do you like change? Surprises? Or do you like to know the lay of the land before setting out on a journey? Well, honestly, one thing is certain; life is uncertain. A pandemic takes over the world. Jobs go away. ICUs are overcrowded. Death hits. Grief follows. Isolation leads to loneliness which leads to depression.

While uncertainty is part of the norm, today’s passage tells us straight up that God delivers confidence. Not one of God’s promises will ever fail; God’s word will always come to pass. “God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?” (Numbers 23:19). Of course not!

Without God, life is a roller coaster of emotions. Without God, unexpected changes will blow us in every direction. Without God, life is foundationless. But a relationship with God, through his Son, Jesus Christ, changes everything. He is our constant. He is our anchor. When you know God, you are able to say with Joshua, “[I know with all my heart and soul] not one word of all the good promises that the Lord [my God gives me will fail].”

Talking Points

  • Thank God for the confidence he provides in the midst of inevitable change. Let that confidence drive away your fear, doubt, and anxiety.
  • Teach (show and tell) your children how to face uncertainty with the confidence God provides. Model and mentor the truth that God’s promises never fail!

Father, thank you for keeping every promise you make. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
