Check Your Heart

2 Samuel 11:2-3

One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her.

What Eve did in the Garden and Achan did in Jericho, David did in Jerusalem. He followed the three-part pattern of temptation – he saw, he wanted, and he took. While each part of temptation is luring, it’s the sum of the three that equals sin. And sin, even forgiven sin, always carries consequences.

After that night with Bathsheba, things were never the same. David’s son, Absalom, killed David’s firstborn son, Amnon, and conspired to take the throne from his father.  David had to run for his life. While David was gone, Absalom had sexual liaisons on the roof of the palace for all to see. Finally, Absalom was killed in battle. Certainly, the damage was done to David’s reputation. As one has said, “The beard of reputation once shorn is hard to grow back.”

Ask God to check your heart. Examine your sexual temptations that lead to the sins of lust, pornography, and adultery. Examine your materialistic tendencies that lead to the sins of greed and avarice. Examine your areas of personal pride that always go before a fall. Each part of the temptation is dangerous enough. Don’t let them add up to sin.

Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
