Building Bigger Barns

Luke 12:15

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

In today’s passage, Jesus tells a story about a rich man whose land produced a bumper crop. The man already had everything he needed. This man could have used the abundance to help others, but instead, he decided to build bigger barns to store the crop. He thought to himself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.” But God had another plan.

God told the man that his life soon would be over. That very night, he would die. All of this man’s planning, efforts, and energy were for naught. After he was gone, someone else would get all that he had prepared for himself. In Jesus’ story, God called the man a “fool.”

What about you? What are you doing with the material blessings God graciously gives? Hoarding it away is not the answer. Spending your money on bigger, better and faster things is not the answer. Taking life easy is not the answer. The answer is this simple prayer: God, how do You want me to use the great blessings from Your hand? The action is simple as well: do what God is asking you to do.

Father, You have blessed me with much. Please show me how You want me to use the things You have given. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
