Breaking Down the Walls

Joshua 6:20

When the trumpets sounded, the people shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the people gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so every man charged straight in, and they took the city.

The Art of War, written by Sun Tzu in 6th century BC, is one of the oldest books on military strategy. Each of its thirteen chapters is devoted to one aspect of warfare. Great military leaders like General Douglas MacArthur claim to have been inspired by the work. As comprehensive as the book is, there is no strategy recommended like the one God had for the defeat of Jericho.

For six days the fighting men of Israel were instructed to walk around the walled city of Jericho one time. On the seventh day, they were to walk around the city seven times. After the march the trumpeters were to “sound a loud blast,” and all the people were to “give a loud shout.” After that exercise, God promised that the wall of Jericho would collapse, and the people could go straight into the city.

Do you have any walls that need to be collapsed in your life? It’s very possible you won’t find a successful strategy online or in a bestselling “How To” book. Block out some time, and openly talk to the Lord about all the things keeping you from following hard after him. Believe me, he is an expert at breaking down walls.

Father, I pray that each of us will spend time with you regarding the barriers in our lives that keep us from a more intimate and powerful relationship with you. Allow us to see the walls collapse. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
