Betrayal

Psalm 55:1-8
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil of David.

Listen to my prayer, O God, do not ignore my plea; hear me and answer me. My thoughts trouble me and I am distraught because of what my enemy is saying, because of the threats of the wicked; for they bring down suffering on me and assail me in their anger. My heart is in anguish within me; the terrors of death have fallen on me. Fear and trembling have beset me; horror has overwhelmed me. I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest. I would flee far away and stay in the desert; I would hurry to my place of shelter, far from the tempest and storm.”

Have you ever been betrayed by a close friend? The pain, disappointment, and confusion are hard to put into words. Shots from an enemy are painful enough but when a friend draws back the bow and lets the arrow fly…that’s a heart wound.

In today’s psalm a close friend has wounded David (see Ps. 55:13-14). He is distraught. His heart is anguished. He is overtaken with “fear and trembling” and overwhelmed by “horror.” He wishes that he could take on the wings of a bird and fly far away from it all.

Have you been there? Maybe you are there today. The harsh reality of life is that friends, even close friends, will disappoint. But there is one who will never let us down. If you feel alone you are not because Jesus is the friend that will never leave nor forsake you. He will always stay by your side…no matter what.

Lord Jesus, I pray for those who feel alone today. Warm their heart by Your Spirit. Remind them of Your great love. Allow them to feel Your arms wrapped around them. Encourage the lonely by reminding them that they are never alone. In Your name. Amen.
