BATTLE READY: THE GEAR

by | Nov 23, 2023 | Battle Ready, Daily Devotion | 0 comments

The greatest weapon in the spiritual battle is prayer—talking with God. We can only be strong in the strength of his might. And that strength comes when we are in conversation with the One in charge of the battle. Even when we are all buckled up in our battle gear, we must hear the voice of the Sovereign Commander. He is the only One who brings the victory.

Ephesians 6:10-18
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil . . . Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayers and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.

Let’s break down the weapon of prayer in the spiritual battle.

First, our prayer must be directed by the Spirit. Paul says that our praying should be “in the Spirit.” That means that the Spirit who lives within us is prompting and directing our conversations with God. Too often, we make prayer a monologue. We tell God all we need and expect a quick response. But we are in a spiritual battle. We must be listening to the Commander’s instruction. He sees the whole battlefield. He knows where and when the enemy will attack. Listen to God’s voice and allow the Spirit to control your steps (Ephesians 5:18).

Second, prayer is an ongoing conversation. We are to pray “at all times.” We are to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Prayer is not just part of a scheduled event we call our “quiet time” or our “devo time.” It is vital to set aside time when you are alone with the Lord. But don’t act as if God stays behind when you close your Bible and say, “Amen.” He is with you always and continuously ready to talk.

Third, we must talk to God with “all prayers and supplication.” There should be a freshness and spontaneity in our conversations. Jesus says we should not “keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words” (Matthew 6:7-8 NIV). Learn to pray by reading the Psalms. Throughout the book are prayers of thanksgiving, joy, sorrow, doubt, frustration, trust, and praise. These remind us that we should tell God everything that is on our hearts.

How are your conversations with God going? Are you listening to the Sovereign Commander? Are you battle ready?

Father,
Keep us alert in our communication with you. Help us to pray with perseverance and keep the conversations going. Help us share all that is on our hearts and listen to what is on your heart. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
