Basket of Wickedness

Zechariah 5:6-8

I asked, “What is it?” He replied, “It is a basket.” And he added, “This is the iniquity of the people throughout the land.” Then the cover of lead was raised, and there in the basket sat a woman! He said, “This is wickedness,” and he pushed her back into the basket and pushed its lead cover down on it.

In Zechariah’s vision, a large basket was opened before him. Represented by a woman, the basket contained “the iniquity of the people throughout the land.” The wickedness was pushed down into the basket and a heavy cover was placed over it. In the vision, the basket of wickedness was taken far away.

While the prophet’s vision is unique, the truth it teaches occurs repeatedly throughout Scripture. Believers need to get sin out of their lives. We need to put our wickedness in a container, so to speak, and dispose of it. We cannot coddle sin and love Jesus at the same time. We must be sorry for our sin and turn from it (in one word, repentance).

This is God’s powerful promise to all believers: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). When we confess our sin, we put a heavy lid on the basket of our wickedness. God does the rest. He forgives. He purifies. And He takes the basket and hurls “all our iniquities into the depths of the sea” (Micah 7:19).

Father, thank You for taking away my sin. Thank You for throwing all my sin into the depths of the sea. Help me to move from the guilt of my sin to the freedom of forgiveness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
