Authority!

Matthew 7:28-29

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.

Today’s passage concludes the Sermon on the Mount. In this sermon Jesus addressed everything from lust to love, from murder to money, from judging others to being judged by God. It is indeed the greatest sermon ever preached by the greatest preacher who ever lived.

The people of Jesus’ day had heard many sermons. The religious leaders waxed eloquently about the do’s and don’ts of the law. They heaped guilt on their listeners, tearing others down by building themselves up. However, the crowds were amazed at the teaching of Jesus. His words were delivered with authority, from the heart of God to the heart of man.

God’s Word is not reserved for first century listeners gathered on the side of a mountain. God’s living Word is available every day for us to read, contemplate, and apply. The Word of God carries the authority of God. It never ceases to amaze those who take the time to read it.

Father, thank You for Your powerful, living, and authoritative Word. May I be a hearer and doer of it. Amaze me each day with Your powerful words of life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
