An Eternal Throne

Psalm 89:19-29
Once you spoke in a vision, to your faithful people you said: “I have bestowed strength on a warrior; I have raised up a young man from among the people. I have found David my servant; with my sacred oil I have anointed him. My hand will sustain him; surely my arm will strengthen him. The enemy will not get the better of him; the wicked will not oppress him. I will crush his foes before him and strike down his adversaries. My faithful love will be with [David], and through my name his horn will be exalted. I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. He will call out to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior. ’ And I will appoint him to be my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.

King Saul was Israel’s first king, followed by King David. While David was far from perfect, he had a tender heart for God. He became the standard for all the kings after him. The kingdom was divided by civil war following David’s son, Solomon. But even with the chaos of the split, God promised that one day the King of Kings would come through David’s line.

Matthew started his Gospel with a “record of the genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David….” Both Matthew and Luke show how Jesus came through the house and lineage of David; so the psalmist can say that David’s throne will never fail, his line will be forever, and his throne will last “as long as the heavens endure.” Jesus will always reign as king.

A study of the Old Testament kings shows a mixed bag of men who were on and off in their commitment to God. Success, and the power that comes with it, brought many a good king, and his kingdom, down. But Jesus changed all of that. He is the true Servant-Leader who humbled Himself to death, even death on the cross. Our confidence is this: King Jesus will always be on the throne and reigns with righteousness and justice.

Lord Jesus, thank You for Your kingdom that will never end. Thank You for taking my sins in your body on the cross. You are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
