Already, Not Yet

Luke 17:20-21

Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, Jesus replied, “The coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed, nor will people say, ‘Here it is,’ or ‘There it is,’ because the kingdom of God is in your midst.”

The Jewish people in Jesus’ day were sick and tired of living under the rule of Rome. While Rome tolerated their religious practices, the Jews were taxed into poverty and lived as second-class citizens. They longed for the promised Messiah to set them free. They expected a deliverer like Moses to establish the kind of kingdom enjoyed during the days of David and Solomon.

Jesus was the Messiah, and He did come to establish a kingdom. However, it was not a physical government with palaces and kings. Jesus ushered in a spiritual kingdom. He sets up His rule in our hearts.

The kingdom of God is “already, not yet.” It is here now for all who have trusted in Jesus as their Savior. Wherever Jesus is the kingdom is, and we experience this kingdom of the King. One day He will come again to establish His physical, eternal kingdom. The believer has the best of both worlds — the kingdom now and the one to come.

Father, thank You for sending Your Son to establish His kingdom in my heart. May I live my life demonstrating His rule in my thoughts, words, and actions. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
