All I Want for Christmas: Peace

Matthew 1:21, 24-25
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.

In Hebrew, the name was “Joshua.” In Greek, the form changed to “Jesus.” But in both languages, the meaning was the same—“the Lord saves.” Matthew clearly explained why the Son of God should be named Jesus. He wrote, “for he will save his people from their sins.”

Israel was in chaos. They lived under the tyranny of Rome. The Jewish people were taxed into poverty. They desperately needed peace. Some thought that peace would come through a military general. Others wanted a political leader to overthrow the Roman government from the inside. Still, others living with the results of poverty wanted someone, anyone, to deliver them from sickness and physical hardship.

Today many people live in chaos. Fear and doubts drag them down. Anxiety saturates their hearts. People want a Savior to get them a job, fix their marriage, heal them from an illness, help them recover from an addiction, or put their shattered lives back together. But the common denominator is a desire for peace—peace with the living God. Only Jesus can save us from the chaos of our sinful hearts and give us peace.

Lord Jesus, thank you for being our Savior. Thank you for purchasing our eternal salvation by your death on the cross. May we never confuse eternal salvation—man’s root problem—with temporal symptoms. In your name, we pray. Amen.
