All I Want for Christmas: Jesus

by | Dec 20, 2022 | All I Want for Christmas, Daily Devotion | 1 comment

During this week of Christmas, our focus is on Jesus. Here is how Isaiah describes the Messiah.

Isaiah 9:6
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Today let’s focus on Jesus as the “Mighty God.”

Jesus was not the Messiah the Jews were expecting. They lived under the oppression of Rome and longed for a political and military deliverer. The One who was born in a stable to a poor Jewish girl did not meet their expectations. Carpenters were not normally the occupation of great teachers and leaders. And then there was the cross.  Hanging seemingly helpless on the cross is not what is expected to happen to a man who claimed to be God.

But the resurrection changed everything!

The disciple named Thomas said he would not believe that Jesus had been raised unless he could put his hand on the place where the spear was thrust into Jesus’ side and see the huge wounds left by the spikes that pinned Jesus to the cross. Then he came face to face with Jesus, who said, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Remember Thomas’ response? “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:24-28).

Through his death and resurrection, Jesus defeated man’s greatest enemy. “The last enemy to be destroyed is death” (1 Cor. 15:26). Through his death, Jesus destroyed Satan, the one who had power over death. The work of Jesus on the cross breaks us free from slavery to death (Heb. 2:14-15).

Jesus is and always has been the Mighty God!

Lord Jesus, we bow before you today, thanking you for your work on the cross and proclaiming, “My Lord and my God!” You are the Mighty God! In your name. Amen.
