Luke 1:56

Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

The words from the angel Gabriel were hard to fathom. He told Mary that she had been chosen by God to give birth to His Son. Although a virgin, she would conceive. She understood that nothing was impossible with God and she surrendered to God’s will for her. Yet it all must have seemed surreal.

The angel told Mary that her cousin, Elizabeth, who was well beyond childbearing years, was six months pregnant. As soon as the angel left, Mary hurried to the hill country. Seeing Elizabeth’s pregnancy confirmed to Mary that Gabriel’s visit was not a dream; she would indeed give birth to the Son of God. Now, after spending three months with Elizabeth, it was time to head back home.

I wonder what went through Mary’s mind as she made the journey back to the little village of Nazareth. Along with immense joy she had to face some harsh realities. She would have to tell her parents and Joseph. How could they believe what she could not explain? Soon everyone would see the evidence of her situation. Small villages did not treat kindly girls who were pregnant out of wedlock. Mary’s mind must have been filled with varying emotions.

Father, thank You for giving Mary the strength for her incredible journey. Thank You for always giving me everything I need to do what You are calling me to do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

For parents: While we cannot know what went through Mary’s mind, we can spend time imagining the difficulty of her situation. This helps make Scripture come alive. Spend time with your children to discuss, age appropriately, Mary’s challenges. Please share with us some of the nuggets from your discussion. Email us at prayer@ronmoore.org.
