Years ago, Lori and I were taking our son back to college when, on the way, the traffic came to a sudden halt. After a time of stop-and-go, state troopers directed us off the highway onto the side road, where we drove for several miles. We knew that an accident had occurred on the main road, and it must have been a bad one. It was. A teenage girl, an outstanding athlete in our area, had been killed in a car crash. I am sure her family misses her every day.

I called it the athletic stance. When I coached, it was the first thing I taught. Feet spread apart just a bit wider than the shoulders, knees slightly bent, leaning forward toward the balls of your feet, and both hands open and held out with elbows bent. I lined up the players, had them get in the athletic stance, and then walked down the line, pushing each player’s shoulders. In that posture, you don’t lose your footing; you keep your balance, and you stand firm. And from that position, you can move with agility whether you are a cornerback or a shortstop.

The apostle Paul’s life was not some ivory tower professorial existence spewing forth classroom theories and then retreating to his office to read another book. He lived in the real world, learning from real-life experiences. And there, he learned that God provides exactly what we need for whatever he is calling us to do. Paul learned this through experience. And so do we.
