[expand title=”Devotion Text”]Hosea 13:14
I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol; I shall redeem them from Death. O Death, where are your plagues? O Sheol, where is your sting? Compassion is hidden from my eyes.
There is nothing glamorous about death…not one thing. Death rips from our clutching hands those things we hold onto for dear life. Whether death is quick and unexpected, or wins the day after a long battle—it is the final enemy.
But things are different for the believer. We grieve—for sure—but not like those who have no eternal hope. The God we serve holds power over the grave. With Jesus death never takes a victory lap. It’s starting and finish line are in the same place and both are swallowed up in victory.
Writing about the resurrection from the dead in 1 Corinthians 15, the apostle Paul used today’s passage to remind his readers that death never stands on the winner’s platform. Jesus holds absolute power over the grave. If you would like to trust in the One who can usher you from death to eternal life, I invite you to pray the following prayer.
Talking to God
Lord Jesus, I admit that I am a sinner. I know that the penalty of my sin is physical, spiritual, and eternal death. I acknowledge that I can’t do anything about my situation. But I know that you came to pay the penalty for my sin. I trust in you alone as the One who died in my place. I trust in you alone as the only One who can place me in an eternal relationship with the living God. I desire to be your child—forever. Amen.
