Chief Shepherd

1 Peter 5:1-4

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

This passage is written to elders who are appointed to lead the church. However, the principles apply to all who are given leadership responsibilities. In this passage, there are five principles and a promise.

  1. Shepherd those whom God has placed under your care. They may be your children, employees, or a church congregation. Shepherding is a significant responsibility.
  2. Willingly watch over those under your care. This should never be an assignment you feel you have to do. Rather it is a privilege you get to do.
  3. Never use your position of trust for dishonest gain.
  4. Never use your authority to lord over or hurt others.
  5. Always live as a godly example.

One day, Jesus, the chief Shepherd will appear. All will bow down to him. On that final day, the faithful shepherds will hear, “Well done!” and receive the victor’s crown that will never fade. On that day, every sacrifice of leadership will be well worth it.

Father,

Remind us that how we lead today will determine what we hear and receive from the chief Shepherd.

In Jesus’ name. Amen.
